AEP to Pilot AMI Monitoring System

08 August 2017

Vencore, Inc. says that its research arm, Vencore Labs, was awarded a contract from American Electric Power (AEP) to pilot a continuous monitoring service of the utility’s Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI).

Under the contract, Vencore Labs will deliver an infrastructure monitoring technology for smart grid field networks in two operating companies within AEP. The SecureSmart service will provide a monitoring and analysis approach for AEP’s wireless field networks, increasing visibility into system operation and improving the ability to react more quickly to maintain and protect its AMI and distribution automation (DA) systems.

The system is intended to help to more efficiently investigate and diagnose system operation issues using the product’s sensor-based architecture and applications.

SecureSmart is an integrated cybersecurity, operations and engineering approach for AMI, DA and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems.
