Hydraulic Institute tackles skills shortage with pump system certification initiative
GlobalSpec News Desk | January 20, 2025The Hydraulic Institute (HI) has introduced its Pump System Certification (PSC) program to meet the demand for skilled professionals in the pump and fluid handling industries. This program reportedly offers an industry-recognized certification that validates expertise in essential pump system knowledge, according to the institute.
The PSC is expected to represent a significant advancement for the industry, establishing a standardized framework for recognizing and developing the critical knowledge and skills necessary for success in this field, the institute explained.
The certification evaluates an individual’s proficiency in 16 core knowledge areas related to pumps and systems. Developed by industry experts, the program addresses the skills gap through three approaches:
- Formalizing knowledge transfer: By providing a structured learning path, the program ensures consistency in knowledge across the industry, addressing the limitations of informal on-the-job training.
- Streamlining workforce development: Employers can integrate the certification into their training programs using HI-provided resources, allowing experienced employees to dedicate less time to training new hires.
- Attracting and retaining talent: The certification serves as a valuable credential for job seekers, helping them demonstrate their expertise to potential employers.
To assist candidates in preparing for the certification exam, Hydraulic Institute University, HI’s educational foundation, has developed a comprehensive training program, prioritizing fundamental pump training to address the industry’s need for onboarding and training new employees. The PSC program now serves as a capstone to validate this learning, whether through the expanded HI 40.9 Pump Industry Fundamentals Body of Knowledge curriculum or employer-based training initiatives. This certification ensures that practitioners across the industry share a common understanding of pump system fundamentals.
The certification benefits both employers and employees, with employers gaining a more skilled and knowledgeable workforce, and employees earning a credential that enhances their career prospects.
