A spin-off company developed by researchers at the University of New Mexico has created a noise camera dubbed NoiseTracker.

The company, called Not-A-Loud, has developed cameras that when loud vehicles drive by them, exceeding an established threshold, the devices are subsequently triggered so that they capture the vehicle’s license plate and a citation can automatically be sent to the driver in the mail.

"I do a lot of traffic safety research so I know about speed camera programs, and I just thought well, if we can catch vehicles speeding, why can't we catch vehicles that are making noise," one of the researchers explained.

The developers of NoiseTracker suggest that by cracking down on road noise, they can also crack down on traffic safety issues.
