The European Union (EU) agreed on Oct. 23 to cut greenhouse gas emissions by at least 40% domestically in a deal that will see all 28 Member States commit to emission reductions.

The agreement, which is a crucial milestone towards the cutting emissions by 80% by 2050, was made ahead of the global climate talks in Paris next year. “It lays down the gauntlet to the world to come forward with ambitious climate targets,” said Energy and Climate Change Secretary of State Ed Davey, who also said it would help Europe to reduce its energy import bill for fossil fuels by around €285bn ($355.4bn) by 2030.
