ProMinent’s Sigma X — Hygienic design for precise metering in hygienic applications
Diana Aoun | March 31, 2022ProMinent’s new motor-driven metering pump Sigma X in the hygienic design version delivers accurate and hygienic metering of cleaning agents, disinfectants, additives and auxiliary agents. The pump’s liquid end is clean-in-place (CIP)-compatible at temperatures of up to 266° F (130° C) and a priming pressure of up to 29 psi (2 bar). Volumes of between 0.11 and 4.4 US gpm (25 and 1000 l/h) can be metered at back pressures of 145 to 58 psi (10 to 4 bar). The new diaphragm metering pump is optimized in terms of dead space, features as few gaps as possible and has smooth, wetted surfaces for flexible and easy use in hygienically sensitive applications.
The innovatively designed liquid end of the new Sigma pump features a simple construction, and the smooth, wetted surfaces facilitate easy CIP and rapid disassembly. The liquid end does not require disassembly during cleaning, so it can be cleaned quickly and reliably while minimizing the risk of bacterial contamination. The option of cleaning at high temperatures reduces water consumption and wastewater generations, as well as demand for cleaning agents. Short cleaning, tooling and idle times ensure good system availability.

The metering chamber is also hermetically sealed and has no shaft passage. Thanks to a PTFE multi-layer diaphragm with diaphragm rupture control (as standard), additional process reliability is ensured. The pump’s sealing surfaces are designed in conformance with the latest guidelines and feature the required minimum radii. All the liquid end’s wetted materials are physiologically safe in accordance with FDA and EN Regulation 1935/2004. The new ball non-return valves have been engineered to ensure optimum turbulence at critical points.
As with all intelligent ProMinent metering pumps, the Sigma X product range in the hygienic design offers flexible networking options. The pumps are connected to process control systems via potential-free contacts, a 0/4-20 mA standard signal or by networking using the integrated PROFIBUS, CANopen interface.
