Folding drone manufacturer Skydio has been awarded a $20 million contract to develop its line of X2D drones for the U.S. Army.

As part of the contract, Skydio will supply its X2D line of foldable drones to the U.S. Army's Short Range Reconnaissance (SRR) Program — which is a program for conducting short range reconnaissance and surveillance activities.

According to Skydio, the X2D drone includes artificial intelligence (AI) features such as subject detection and obstacle avoidance, sensors for capturing 4K videos and GPS-based night flight. Additionally, the almost 3 lb drone is capable of 35 minute flight times at top speeds of 25 mph and of reducing its dimensions by folding itself in half.
