Precision non-contact measurement technology helps Woodward, Inc. maintain market leadership
April 15, 2020ZYGO 3D optical profiler products give engineers and machinists at Woodward, Inc. valuable insight into surface finish, enabling them to continually raise the bar for product quality and reliability. Watch the video to hear them speak candidly about how ZYGO's advanced measurement technologies enable them to measure and analyze precision surfaces with unprecedented precision, giving them the edge to maintain leadership in the markets they serve.
Here are some observations from key personnel at Woodward Inc. that appear in the video...
"When a machinist pulls a part off of the machine and he looks at it he sees chatter in there, he walks over to a contact profilometer and measures it ... he may not see that ... but he can visually see that it's there. And then you start to measure it with a 3D instrument, and then you can see it. And then what you can start doing from that point is you can start understanding what in your process that's causing that."
"One of our entry points with 3D metrology was speed and 100% inspection. The other thing is the repeatability of the measurements. You'll find that the optical measurements tend to be far more repeatable on a regular basis than contact [measurements], which is extremely important because that means you're really gauging the process more than the instrument."
"One of the important things with 3D metrology ... is the additional information that you get beyond a 2D standard contact profilometer. The extra data that you get is more important than we can put into words. You know the old saying ... 'a picture is worth a thousand words,' and that's really true."
