The carbon footprint of Danish power cable supplier NKT is expected to shrink with the demonstration of Cable drums manufactured with recycled XLPE reduce material costs and carbon emissions. Source: NKTCable drums manufactured with recycled XLPE reduce material costs and carbon emissions. Source: NKTtechnology for recycling cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE). Two tons of carbon dioxide emissions are saved for each ton of the cable insulating material recycled.

Material costs are also reduced by the recycling process developed through a collaboration with Swedish research institute RISE IVF, AXJO Plastic and material specialist Borealis.

The XLPE recovered from low, medium and high voltage power cables is being used by AXJO Plastic for the manufacture of robust cable drums. NKT is also pursuing a more sustainable manufacturing path by powering its high voltage cable factories in Germany and Sweden with 100% renewable energy sources.
