To create the fabric for the Evolution hoodie, Coalatree collects used coffee grounds from local shops. The company dries the grounds and separates oils that are typically used to make soaps and other cosmetics. The grounds are then pulverized into microscopic particles which are then mixed with shredded plastic bottles. The mixture is extruded through a sieve and melted to create a yarn-like fabric.

In all, it takes three cups of recycled coffee grounds and 10 recycled plastic bottles to create one hoodie.

According to its Kickstarter campaign, the hoodies are pick-pocket proof and block UV rays. Because of coffee's natural odor-absorbing qualities, the hoodies trap three times the odors compared to hoodies made with traditional fabrics.

Coalatree has also manufactured other sustainable clothing items such as socks made from coffee grounds.

"We’ve transformed your morning cup and kept the life cycle of coffee going strong!" the company said on its Kickstarter page. "Coalatree works hard to bring you the most innovative technology that supports a healthy you and a healthy planet. By utilizing discarded materials like coffee grounds and plastic bottles, we’re keeping our waste streams small and making our impact big!"

Coalatree is not alone in its efforts to find solutions to common waste products like plastic and coffee grounds. A Dutch company is turning used diapers into furniture and another company is transforming coffee grounds into inks.
