While detailed measurements of the expansion rate of the universe place the Big Bang at around 13.8 billion years ago, which is considered the age of the universe, this cosmic occurrence can be experienced on a smartphone. A complimentary Big Bang app offered by CERN for Google and Apple smartphones enables the user to explore the origins of the universe through augmented or mixed reality.

After downloading the astronomical app, the first step for the user is to open and close a fist in view of the smartphone camera. Voice-over instructions then provide a seven-minute guide from the evolution of atoms and molecules to the formation of stars, planets and the universe as we know it.
